Obituary

John "Chink" Barboza, 81, of New Bedford died Wednesday August 19, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Born in East Providence, the son of the late Aurelio and Elizabeth (DeLomba) Barboza, he lived in Pawtucket and New Bedford for many years.

Mr. Barboza was formerly employed as chef in the merchant marine for Red Star and Exxon, and later worked for the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Steamship Authority.

He was a member of National Maritime Union and many civic and social organizations in New Bedford and Rhode Island.

Survivors include two children, Justine L. Medina and her husband Karlo, and Duane J. Barboza, all of New Bedford; two brothers, David Barboza of South Carolina and Raymond Barboza of California; three grandchildren, Destin Barboza, Ariana Barboza, and Noah Medina; his loving caregivers, Elena Robinson and Brian Barboza; and nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Harry Barboza, George Barboza, Alfred Barboza, Dorothy DaSilva, Rose Pinto, Yvonne Gonsalves, and Virginia Barboza.

His Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4-8 PM prior to the service. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
