Mildred C. (Conkle) Yourtee, 92, of Windham, NH died Wed. at Windham Terrace, Windham, NH.
Mildred was born in Oxford, Alabama. She spent her formative years in Atlanta and attended Oglethorpe University. In 1941 she married Lawrence Karn Yourtee and they relocated to Austin, TX where Lawrence completed his PhD at the University of Texas.
In 1947 when Larry accepted a professorship of chemistry at Hamilton College, they made their home in Clinton, NY where they lived happily for the next 50 years. Mildred was an avid reader and a member of the Clinton Monday Book Club for over 25 years. In Clinton, she enjoyed gardening and was a gourmet cook.
Mildred developed an ongoing appreciation for art and enjoyed frequent visits to major art museums in the Northeast, Great Britain and Greece. She was a founding member of the Kirkland Bird Club and an enthusiastic amateur ornithologist. Her love of nature inspired her in 1966 to spearhead a community-wide effort that saved a historic 200 year old Sycamore tree in Clinton, which still graces Clinton with its beauty 45 years later. Mildred’s later years have been spent close to her family in Windham, NH.
She is predeceased by her husband, Professor Lawrence Yourtee, her sister Mary Robinson and her parents Beatrice and John Conkle.
She is survived by her son Dr. Edward Yourtee and his wife Elaine, grandsons Jonathan and Matthew Yourtee, all of Windham, NH and by her granddaughter Sumiko Yourtee and her husband Wayne Rowe of Portland, OR and by her nephew Richard Yourtee of Bethlehem, PA.
A Memorial Service will be held Sat. at 1 PM at Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem, NH. Her final resting place will be the Hamilton College Cemetery in Clinton, NY.
