Muriel J. (Wolff) Young 91 of East Walpole died August 12 in Caritas Norwood Hospital; she was the wife of the late George W. Young Sr. who died in 1984.
Born in Boston, May 1, 1918, the daughter of the late Grover and Lydia (Greening) Wolff. She attended schools in South Boston and helped to raise her five sisters during the Depression years.
Mrs. Young proudly served as a WAVE in the Navy during World War II and was trained as Spec.S. Master at Arms. She was a charter member of Waves National “Old Ironsides Chapter 17., a charter member of Women in Military Service Memorial ,Washington DC , a lifetime charter member of World War II Memorial in Washington DC, a member of the US Navy Memorial Foundation in Washington DC, and a member of the American Legion Post 70 in Norwood.
After serving her country, Muriel then attended New England School of Art where she refined her passion for painting, receiving her diploma in 1949. A talented artist in both watercolor and oil, she shared her paintings with many family members and friends. She was a member of the Copley Society of Boston and the Brockton Art Society.
Mrs. Young’s greatest love was raising her two sons in the East Walpole home built by her husband in 1959. She enjoyed her gardens, feeding the birds and squirrels, and painting the many landscapes close to her home. Early family vacations were to Cape Cod and then in later years to New London, New Hampshire. She especially enjoyed fishing in Onset, Mass and did so well into her seventies. Time spent with her family brought her tremendous joy.
Mrs. Young worked several part-time jobs until her sons were in high school. She then worked at Factory Mutual Insurance Company in Norwood for over 15 years, retiring as a micro-graphics supervisor.
She is survived by her sons, George W. Young Jr. of East Walpole, and Jonathan Young and his wife Nancy of Gray, Maine
Nana Young will be greatly missed by her granddaughters Kristen Young of South Hero, Vermont and Laurie Young of Seattle, Washington.
She is also survived by her sisters, Ruth Farino of Randolph and Jane Norris of Brockton. She was the sister of the late Vera Gudenas, Mary Sherwood and Fedora Backlund.
Her funeral service and burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Copley Society of Boston, 158 Newbury St. Boston Ma 02116-2888. Arrangements are under the care of the Ginley Funeral Home, Walpole.
