Obituary

Flynn, Mary T., age 97 of West Roxbury, formerly of Jamaica Plain, co-founder of A. Flynn & Sons Catering and devoted wife of 56 years to the late Anthony Flynn was delivered peacefully into the hands of God Tuesday evening August 11, 2009. Mary was born Mary Theresa Manning in the lovely Irish seaport city of Cork, into a large family of four brothers, James, Patty, Michael, Eddy and two sisters, Eileen and Nora. When she was only 16 she was sent alone on a large ship to go to America to care for an ailing aunt. The day she left, her younger brother Jim sat on a big hill and cried as he watched her depart from his life, for what he thought would be forever. When Mary was 18 and caring for her aunt in Chicago, she met the love of her life, a fellow countryman from the Irish city of Mayo; Anthony Flynn and they soon wed. They reared a family of seven children including Michael and his wife Patricia Flynn of Dedham, Francis and his wife Janice Flynn of Marshfield, Eileen Downing and her husband Jesse of West Roxbury, Carol McNamara and her husband Brian of Concord, the late John Flynn, Mary Kearney and Noreen Feehan. Mother in law of Jeanne Flynn of Pembroke and Patrick Kearney of Norwell. Mary was hard working, intelligent, industrious and ambitious. Early on, she and Anthony moved from Chicago to Massachusetts, where some of Anthony's brothers had settled. Mary became involved in real estate sales and they also opened up a successful catering business in Hyde Park known as A. Flynn & Sons Catering. They lived in Jamaica Plain on Prince St. and had a summer home in Marshfield. When Mary and Anthony became empty nesters they moved to West Roxbury. Mary experienced the joy of watching her family blossom. She leaves behind her greatest legacy, 20 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren. Anthony passed away in 1986 and Mary continued a busy life helping the elderly as she had done early in her life, until frailty necessitated her move to the Ellis Nursing Home in Norwood. Her family and friends will miss Mary's genuine kindness, her loving gentleness and her quick witted sense of humor, which was always followed by a gentle laugh and her determined fighting spirit. Her life's journey was enriched by her soul mate Anthony, whom she walked and worked with over their married years, offering support and love that nourished their family, joy and success.
