DUDLEY – Brendan A. “Bud” Canty, of 66 West Main Street, died Saturday, August 8, 2009, at home in the company of his family.
He leaves his wife of 44 years, Monica E. (Griffin) Canty; 5 children, Brendan T. Canty of Milford, CT, Laureen A. Morrison of Oxford, Michael P. Canty of Dudley, Colleen A. Kelleher of Holden and Monica Erin Canty of Richmond, VA; a brother, Ambrose Canty of Southbridge; 4 grandchildren, Amy, Brendan, Dylan and Shannon; a great grandson Devon; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Edna C. (Deary) Canty, by 5 brothers and 7 sisters.
He was born in Webster, one of the fourteen children of Patrick and Anne (McCauley) Canty. He lived in Webster and Dudley all his life. He graduated from Saint Louis High School in Webster, where he was captain of the basketball team, and from Becker Junior College in Leicester, where he was also on the varsity team. He was a referee for high school and college basketball games for many years.
Mr. Canty proudly served his country in World War II in the United States Army, earning a Bronze Star Medal. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945.
He was the proprietor of Deary Bros., Inc. in Sturbridge from 1948 to 1978. He then worked for Deary Bros. Dairy before retiring.
He was a member of Saint Anthony of Padua Church where he was the last surviving member of the church’s building committee. He was a member of the Webster-Dudley Knights of Columbus Council #228 and the Webster-Dudley American Legion Post #184.
The funeral, with full military honors, will be held Wednesday, August 12, with a Mass at 11:00 AM in Saint Anthony of Padua Church, 24 Dudley Hill Road. Burial will be in Saint Anthony’s Cemetery, Webster. The Webster-Dudley Veterans Council will perform the military honors. At his request, there are no calling hours. Following the burial, the family will receive friends and relatives from 1:00 to 4:00 PM in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Louis School Endowment Fund, 15 Lake St., Webster, MA 01570. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main Street, Webster.
