O'Brien, Audrey J. (Bernard) 84 years old of Hingham, formerly of Milton.
Devoted wife of the late John F O'Brien. Died peacefully on August, 3 2009 at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton, after a courageous fight with cancer. Survived by her six loving children: Barry of Walpole, Marcia of Haverhill, Susan Finholt of Marlow, NH, John of Whitman, Mark of Pleasanton, CA, and Robert of Milton. Also survived by her brother Robert Bernard of Norwood and her sister Robertine Stepanek of Osterville as well as 12 nieces and nephews. Audrey was grandmother to 15 grandchildren and was blessed with one great grandchild days before her passing.
She was born on July 16, 1925 and was raised in Milton. Audrey graduated from Milton High School in 1942 at the early age of 16. She was Co-Captain of the Milton High girls' basketball team and also ran track for the school. Her yearbook described her as, "Brains + Beauty + Personality = Audrey." During WWII, she was a volunteer hostess with the USO. She attended Chandler Business School and was a former secretary to the sales managers at Cole-Hersee in South Boston and B.B. Chemical in Cambridge, where she met her future husband John. She married in 1950 and later moved to Hingham, where she made her home for 54 years. Audrey was a devout Roman Catholic. She was a founding member of Resurrection Parish in Hingham and attended Mass daily. She was also a member of the Catholic organization, Opus Dei. Her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox, and enjoyed traveling internationally on Catholic pilgrimages. She also loved playing Trivial Pursuit and Solitaire, doing crossword puzzles, and watching Jeopardy and Catholic television. Audrey was a strong pro-life advocate and was a long-time member of Massachusetts Citizens for Life. She also volunteered for Friends of the Unborn, driving young unwed mothers to go food shopping. She was active in many political campaigns and was elected as a delegate to the 1990 Massachusetts Republican Convention. She touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, August 5, from 4pm to 8pm in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM.
All are encouraged to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, August 6 at 10 AM in Resurrection Church, 1057 Main St., Hingham.
