Obituary

Salem: Marie B (Gilligan) Freedman, age 92 of Salem, died Saturday morning, July 18, 2009 at the NSMC / Salem Hospital following a brief illness. She was predeceased in 1982 by her loving husband, the late Edward P. Freedman.

Born in Peabody and raised in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Anna M. (Terrell) Gilligan. A graduate of St. Chretienne Academy in Salem she continued her studies in Belgium. A devoted wife and mother, in later years, Marie devoted many hours volunteering with residents and providing them with entertainment at the former Danvers State Hospital. An avid reader, she also belonged to several Bible study groups and was a faithful life long member of the Immaculate Conception Parish.

She is survived by 2 sons: William J. Freedman and his wife Debbie of Errol, NH, Thomas T. Freedman and his wife Peg of Gloucester. Marie was the proud grandmother of 4 grandchildren, Anna E. Freedman of Somerville, Thomas E. Freedman and Emily A. Freedman of Errol, NH, and Francis F. Freedman of Gloucester. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a special sister-in-law and friend Noonie Gilligan of Beverly. Marie was predeceased by her brother William P. Gilligan whose funeral was Saturday July 18th. She also leaves behind 2 wonderful friends, Sylvia Moynihan and Helen Guenette both of Salem.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St. [Rt. 114 / 1-A] Salem on Thursday morning at 8am to be followed by her funeral mass in Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Blvd., Salem at 9 a.m. Visiting hours: Wednesday 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
