Augusta, GA---Mrs. Barbara Ellen Cowan Weidenbach, 96, beloved wife of the late Henry Weidenbach, Jr., entered into rest Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at University Hospital.
Born in 1912 to the late Elizabeth Beck and George Edward Cowan, Sr., in Thomson, GA, she lived most of her life in Augusta. She was a 1930 graduate of Tubman High School, where she played on the tennis team. She attended nursing school at the Willenford Children’s Hospital, prior to her marriage. She retired after twenty-five years as financial secretary, for Crawford Avenue Baptist Church, but remained an active member, Sunday school teacher and leader into her nineties. All who knew her were touched by her kindness and generosity. She will be greatly missed.
Barbara is survived by a daughter, Joan Weidenbach Stein (Nicholas) of Savannah. Her daughter Bonnie Weidenbach Colley (Henry) preceded her in death. Other survivors include three grandchildren: Kelly Sikes Marchione, Tara Schafer Capps (Richard), Henry Todd Schafer (Pascha), six great-grandchildren: Kathryn Higginbotham, Macy Elizabeth Capps, Anna Hillis Capps, Samuel Henry Capps, Isabella Victoria Schafer and Lila Grace Schafer. Nephews, Michael Cowan (Wanda), Warner Robbins, GA, Howard Derrick, Dallas TX, and Patrick Derrick, Greenville, SC, also survive her.
In addition to her daughter, parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward Joseph Weidenbach, a brother, George Edward Cowan, Jr., and two sisters, Ruth Cowan Steadman, and Katherine Cowan Derrick.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 10:00 am at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Reverend Brian LaFavor officiating.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 10, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, at Platt’s Crawford Avenue.
