Beloved wife of William Kirby of Hingham and the late Edward Martin. Former wife of the late Albert Ashmanskas,Sr. Loving mother of Albert Ashmanskas, Jr. of Quincy, Joan Troup & husband Emile of Canton, Thomas Ashmanskas & wife Maria of Quincy, Judith Koelsch & husband Robert of Hingham, David Ashmanskas & wife Pamela of Quincy and Peter Ashe & wife Theresa of Hanson. Devoted grandmother of William, Darrell, Carlos, & Rima Ashmanskas; Carolyn & Matthew Koelsch; and Jeremy & Eric Ashe. Sister of Cecelia Sullivan of West Roxbury. Also survived by several nieces & nephews.
Mary was an avid golfer. She loved to dance, sew for her family, and play bridge. Growing up in a Lithuanian household in South Boston, Mary was raised to speak fluent Lithuanian. During WWII, all five of her brothers served in the military concurrently, a fact that her family was particularly proud. She was a member of St. Peter's Lithuanian Society and volunteered for the Sisters of Jesus Crucified in South Boston. In later years, her love of golf led her to be a member of the Women's League of the President's Golf Course in Quincy. During this time, she also completed her degree at Quincy Junior College and later taught herself how to be computer proficient. She worked as an office administrator for both Blue Cross Blue Shield and Bank of Boston, retiring in 1990. In 1994, she retired to Tucson, AZ with her then husband Edward J. Martin. While she resided in Arizona, she became a member of the Saddlebrooke Country Club 9 Holers League, a member of the Saddlebrook Singers, played bridge, and volunteered knitting hats for the children of Tucson. She also enjoyed being a greeter at her church. After Edward passed away, she returned to MA and spent her last 4 years at Linden Ponds in Hingham. There she met and married William J. Kirby. During their time together they enjoyed their new friends and activities and combined families. She will be remembered for her independent spirit , her devotion to religion, and love of life.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours Tuesday 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home Wednesday at 9:15 AM prior to the Funeral Mass in Church of the Resurrection, Hingham at 10 AM. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. Donations in memory of Mary may be made to Lithuanian Children’s Relief Fund, 261 Thatcher St., Brockton, MA 02302.
