Obituary

Beatrice M. Wilbur (Arthur), of Plymouth, passed away on July 2nd at the Newfield House in Plymouth at the age of 99. Born December 27, 1909, daughter of James Stewart Arthur of Glasgow, Scotland and Mary E. B. Arthur of Plymouth. She graduated from Plymouth High School, class of 1927 and Salem State College in 1931 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Education. She did graduate work at Harvard, Boston University and Bridgewater State College. She gained her business experience by working summers in the Plymouth Cooperative Bank, the Plymouth Cordage Company office and one summer as a temporary civil service secretary for the U.S Government. Mrs. Wilbur taught in Portsmouth, NH from 1931 to 1944. First in the junior high school and then as Head of the Business Education Dept. in the senior high school. While in Portsmouth, she served 3 years as an officer of the Rockingham County Teachers Association, the last year as president. In 1944 she returned home to Plymouth, teaching first in the junior high school and then as Head of the Business Education Dept. in the senior high school. Retiring in 1974, after 43 years of teaching business education. Mrs. Wilbur was a long time member of the Church of the Pilgrimage and served on its various committees. In the past she taught Sunday school, was assistant superintendent and as advisor to the high school youth group. She sang in the choir for many years and was treasurer of the Guild for many years. Mrs. Wilbur was one of the original bell ringers. A member of the Board of Directors of the Plymouth Fragment Society, she served as treasurer for 20 years. The wife of the late Franklin P. Wilbur, she is survived by her 4 step-children Rosemary Parkman and her husband Albert of Duxbury, Dr. Franklin P. Wilbur and his wife Cheryl of Syracuse, NY; Laurel Nardone and her husband Joseph of Duxbury and Leslie Nunes and her husband Steven of Carver, 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many cousins here in the U.S, Scotland and England. A funeral service will be held on Monday July 6th at 10 AM at the Church of the Pilgrimage followed by burial at Vine Hills Cemetery. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Church of the Pilgrimage Memorial Fund, 8 Town Square, Plymouth, MA 02360.
