Dorothy C. (Houghtaling) Vikre of New Bedford died Saturday June 20, 2009 at Sacred Heart Home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of the late Knut K. Vikre.
Born in Kingston, New York, the daughter of the late William J. and Catherine (Woinoski) Houghtaling, she moved to New Bedford after her marriage in 1944.
She worked for many years at Cherry and Webb until her retirement.
She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Her biggest joys were her family and traveling, having visited Norway, Germany, Hawaii, and Canada.
She leaves two daughters, Kathryn M. Soukup, of Grove City, Ohio, and Geraldine Medas and her husband Richard, of Mattapoisett; five grandchildren, Lisa Thompson, Danielle Brightman, Tracey John, Carl Briggs, and Matthew Medas; six great-grandchildren: Kristine, Derek, and Casey Thompson, and Tessa, Aiden, and Caleigh John; a brother, Gerard Houghtaling; twelve nieces and nephews; and her dear friend Ida Rego.
She was sister to the late William Houghtaling and Mathilda Quigley.
A Memorial Mass will be said in her honor at St. Anthony's Church, Hammond St., Mattapoisett on Wednesday June 24, at 8:00 AM. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
