Obituary

WORCESTER-Sophia C. (Chanis) Johns, 81 of 43 Berkmans Street died Saturday, July 19th in the Christopher House. She leaves her husband of 57 years Chris G. Johns, 2 sons William Johns of Hampton, NH, George Johns of New York City, 2 daughters, Kristina Niedbala of Worcester and Constance Hebert of Westboro, a brother Charles Chanis of Worcester, a sister Dorothy Bowse of Worcester, and 7 grandchildren. Her brother William Chanis predeceased her.

She was born in Worcester the daughter of Spyridon and Vasiliki (Pappas) Chanis. Mrs. Johns was a graduate of Commerce High School. She at one time worked at Heald Machine, and retired in 1987 from Worcester State Hospital where she had worked as an admitting secretary. Mrs. Johns was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, it’s Senior Citizens, the ladies Philoptochos Society and the Daughters of Penelope.

The funeral will be Wednesday, July 23rd from O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue, (oconnorbrothers.com) with a service at 10:00 AM in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday, July 22nd from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.
