Obituary

Daniel Irwin Jamison, III, 75, of Derry, NH, passed away June 14, 2009 after a long illness. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on July 26, 1933, to Jean (Miller) and Daniel I. Jamison, Jr. M.D. He was a graduate of Dormont High School in Pittsburgh, PA. He later graduated with a B.A. in Social Science from Ithaca College and an M.A. in Psychology from Temple University. He completed graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania in Educational Measurement and Research. He worked as a researcher with the Federal Head Start (Get Set) program from its inception in Philadelphia. He worked with Dr. Louise Sandler at Hahnemann University to develop the Denver Developmental Scale for pre-school children, and later as the Director of Children and Youth Programs for the City of Philadelphia. He also taught sociology and criminology courses at Temple University and the Community College of Philadelphia. He was married on December 23, 1955 to Virginia Petermann. They raised their family in Philadelphia, PA. The family spent their summers at Gratiot Lake, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Dan enjoyed antique fire trucks and steam- era trains. He was a volunteer firefighter in Ithaca, NY while in college. His collection included at 1932 Sanford Fire Truck and a 1908 wooden Milwaukee Road caboose once run on the Keweenaw Central Excursion Railroad. He recently received his 50 year pin from the Crescent Lodge #576 F & AM in Pittsburgh. He learned to skate as an adult and became a Gold level figure skating judge. He retired from judging shortly after receiving his 25 year pin. His entire family was involved with figure skating. His sons became professionals after their competitive careers and his wife and daughter followed him into judging. He even took a sabbatical in 1986 to be the assistant carpenter in the Asian tour of “Disney on Ice” with his son and daughter-in-law. Dan was also a private pilot.
He is survived by his sons Daniel I. (Diane) Jamison, IV, of Derry, David Lorain (Kristen) Jamison of Chicago, IL, and daughter Dorothy Jean Jamison of Hancock, MI. He is also survived by four grandchildren; Jessica E. Jamison and Daniel I. Jamison, V, of Derry, and Emma F. Jamison and Riley L. Jamison, of Chicago, IL. ,as well as his former wife Virginia of Gratiot Lake MI.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 19th from 3 – 5pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry, with a funeral service following at 5:00pm in the funeral home. Following cremation, burial will be in the Alleghany Cemetery in Pittsburgh. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the charity of your choice.
