Obituary

Carl R. Weston of Derry, NH, passed away in his home June 12, 2009, surrounded by his wife, all his children, and grandchildren. Born October 21, 1931, he was 77 years old. The youngest son of Gail and Dora Weston, Carl was born and raised in Derry. After graduating from Pinkerton Academy in 1949, Carl earned BS and MS degrees in Poultry Health from the University of New Hampshire. Graduating as an ROTC officer, Carl served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army, stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska for two years before returning to New Hampshire to take the position of Director of Poultry Health at Nichols, Inc. in Exeter. After two years at Nichols, Inc. Carl returned to the University as an interim professor, teaching poultry science before accepting a position with Honegger Farms, Inc. in Forrest, Illinois to serve as the Director of Poultry Health. In 1964 Carl and his family returned to New Hampshire where he accepted the position of Director of Poultry Health for Hubbard Farms in Walpole, where he worked for 28 years until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure at Hubbard Farms, Carl traveled extensively, both domestically and internationally, working in all aspects of poultry health, but with a particular emphasis on disease eradication, vaccine development, bio-security, and the establishment of state and federal veterinary regulatory medicine. A respected and distinguished member of the Poultry Health Industry, Carl served prominently in several organizations, including the Poultry Health Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Avian Pathologists, the N.H. Poultry Growers Association, the Worlds Poultry Veterinary Association, and the United States Animal Health Association. Carl was recognized for many notable accomplishments in his field. Honors included appointment by the Secretary of Agriculture to the General Conference Committee of the National Poultry Improvement Plan, and appointment by the Department of Agriculture to the Avian Influenza Blue Ribbon Committee.
Carl married Marie Murray, also of Derry, on September 17, 1955. The couple had five children: Cynthia (Londonderry, NH), Dianne (Manhattan, NY), Jack (Concord, NH), Robert (Middletown, RI), and Maura (Concord, NH). A loving and devoted husband and father, Carl’s greatest pleasure was spending time with his family, including his twelve grandchildren. A strong believer in the value of education, one of Carl’s proudest accomplishments was the under-graduate and graduate education of his children. He was actively involved in the local community of Walpole, particularly in the school system and the church. He served for a number of years as the President of the P.T.A., as well as a member of the School Board for the Regional High School. He also served as an active and faithful member of the Parish Council of St. Joseph’s Church, and as a member of the Diocesan Council. Upon his retirement from Hubbard Farms, Carl and Marie returned to their native Derry, where they built a home on Beaver Lake. Carl took tremendous pleasure in the activities of his grandchildren, spending a great deal of his retirement days caring for them and attending their various recitals, athletic contests, school programs, and graduations.
Carl is survived by Marie, his loving wife of 53 years, and his daughter, Cynthia and her children, Carl and Olivia Printzlau; his daughter, Dianne and her children, Katherine and James Dorian; his son, Jack, his wife Lori and children, Kate, Lizzie, Andrew, and Juliet Weston; his son Robert, his wife, Ann and children Helen and Jack Weston, and his daughter, Maura, her husband, Jeffrey Bartlett and children, Jeffrey and baby boy Bartlett (expected August 2009).
