Spyros W. "Milo" Zarakotas, 83, of Manchester died June 11, 2009 at Bedford Hills Healthcare Center after a long illness.
Born in Manchester on March 13, 1926, he was the son of Vasilios and Phrosine (Joanou) Zarakotas. He was a lifelong resident of Manchester.
During World War II and the Korean War he served in the US Marine Corps. He served in Guam and Okinawa, and was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in Korea at the Chosin Reservoir. He was also awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Medal and the Victory Medal.
Mr. Zarakotas worked for the US Postal Service for many years.
He was a member of the Elite Chosin Few, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.
The family includes his wife of 49 years, Virginia (Legenc) Zarakotas of Manchester; a step son, Philip Legenc of Pompano Beach, FL; two brothers, Gregory Zarakotas of Manchester and Vaios Zarakotas of Lowell, MA.
IN HIS LIFE: The family also includes a nephew, William Zarakotas and two nieces, Judith Zarakotas and Angela Zarakotas. He was predeceased by a brother, Stephen Zarakotas and two sisters, Madeline Zarakotas and Stavrula Zarakotas.
The funeral was held Monday, June 15, 2009 at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 111 Island Pond Rd., Manchester. Fr. Athanasios Nenes officiated. Committal prayers followed at Pine Grove Cemetery, Calef Rd., Manchester.
