On Tuesday, June 9, 2009, Robert Lowell Evarts, surrounded by his loving family, passed away due to complications from pneumonia.
He was born to the late Robert and Christine (McNeil) Evarts at Home Memorial Hospital in New London on February 24, 1933.
On December 12, 1953, he married Geraldine “Geri” Kostenko and they spent the next 55 years together. Bob leaves behind his wife, two daughters and their families, Susan Evarts and her daughter Kelsey Lloyd of Pawcatuck and Kelsey's father Donald Lloyd of Waterford and Debbie Hurlock and her husband Ted of Saratoga Springs, New York and their children, son Gregory of West Point Military Academy, NY and Lindsey of Saratoga Springs NY and her children "The Twinkies" Ian and Adrienne born 7 weeks ago, Bob's first great grand children; his sister Shirley Elms and her husband Bob of Niantic and their daughter Dr. Christy Tirrell Corbin of Annapolis MD and her daughter Kathryn of Washington DC.
He was predeceased by his younger brother, Fred C. Evarts of Mystic who died in January of 2002.
With great pride he served in the United States Army from May 11, 1953 to July 26, 1956. He was in Korea from January 1954 to July 1955.
He went to work at Electric Boat as an outside machinist and then a mechanical inspector, retiring after 41 years.
Family was of the greatest importance to Bob. He treasured them all. From the time he could see out a car window, he always liked to identify car models, their year and make. He made a large collection of car books and subscribed to many car magazines. He loved his cats, Tommy the Terrible and Rosey.
Bob’s family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 6-8pm. A Service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 11am. Burial with presentation of military honors will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
