Algerina D. (Azevedo) Fernandes, 75, a lifelong resident of Norton died on Sunday May 24, 2009 in the comfort of her home in the presence of her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Jose Fernades to whom she was wed to on June 11, 1955.
Born in Norton, MA on August 16, 1933 she was a loving daughter of the late Francisco and Constance (DaCosta) Azevedo.
Algerina grew up in Norton and was educated in Norton public schools. She was the proud owner of the Produce, Hardware and Liquor Barn in Norton, a business that she established in 1978 and operated with the help of her family. She had formerly been employed by the Town of Norton and held the position of Assistant Town Accountant and when younger she had worked for the former Fernandes Supermarket in Norton.
A lifelong communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Norton, Algerina enjoyed gardening, spending time with family and friends and times spent at her family’s home in Sandwich and going to the beach.
In addition to her beloved husband of nearly 54 years she is survived by her devoted and adoring children Joyce L. Fernandes, Joseph G. Fernandes and his wife Bonnie and Dennis E. Fernandes and his wife Jill all of Norton.
Her funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Friday May 29th at 9:00 A.M. from the Norton Memorial Funeral Home 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave) Norton followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church 133 South Worcester St. Norton. Burial will follow in the Norton Center Cemetery, Norton.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday May 28th from 5-8 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home.
