Wilma (Hogg) Vernon 88 died Sunday May 17 in her home surrounded by her family after a period of failing health. She was the wife of the late Myles Vernon.
Born in Concord and raised in Whitman she was the daughter of the late William and Nelia (Andersen) Hogg and a graduate of Whitman High School Class of 1938.
Nellie had worked as a bookkeeper for MIT and the Ginn & Company both in Boston, as well as the Kellogg Company and Lipotti Pictures both in California.
She moved to East Bridgewater in 1959 and worked for the family business, Peaceful Meadows since that time, she always had a warm ”hello” to those stopping by at the dairy store. She had remained an active and lifelong member of the First Congregational Church of Whitman.
She enjoyed fast cars and at the age of eighteen drove cross country with her girlfriend. In later years she was an avid Red Sox fan.
She is survived by her children Myles K. Vernon, Jr. of Spring, Texas, Nancy Schantz of Pond Ridge, New York, Heidi Parent of Norton, and Holly Vernon of Bridgewater, her sisters Nellie Coots of East Bridgewater, and Mary Corthell of Carver, and her grandchildren Myles and Douglas Vernon. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late William Hogg Jr., James Hogg, Amy Brown, Betty Woodard, Frances Hogg, and Isabel Hogg.
Her funeral service will be held Thursday May 21 at 1 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow in the Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman. Calling hours will be held two hours prior to the service from 11 AM to 1 PM. Donations in her name may be made to the First Congregational Church of Whitman 519 Washington Street, Whitman, MA 02382.
