Joseph A. Alves, Sr., 89

Dateline: Norton, MA

Joseph A. Alves, Sr., 89, a lifelong resident of Norton died on Sunday May 17, 2009 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of the late Menta I. (Cataloni) Alves who passed away on March 4, 2009.
Born in the Barrowsville section of Norton on January 1, 1920 he was a loving son of the late John and Annie (Garrity) Alves.
Joe grew up in Barrowsville, was educated in Norton schools and was a graduate of Norton High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. He was an Aerial Torpedo Mechanic and Demolition Specialist and was honorably discharged on February 7, 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Mr. Alves retired from the Robbins Co. in Attleboro after 49 years of faithful service. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Norton and for many years served as an usher at St. Mary’s Church and was also a longtime member of the Norton VFW.
He was the devoted father of Joseph A. Alves, Jr. of Norton and the late Bradley J. Alves. He was the grandfather of Regina-Jo Alves and Lisa-Ruth Cote both of Phoenix, Arizona and was the brother of Emma Ricketson of New York, Edna Steves of Maine and Frank “Bitzy” Frazer of Maine. Mr. Alves was predeceased by several siblings and is also survived by 3 great grandchildren in Phoenix and several nieces and nephews including Joanie Caldwell of Rehoboth and Jan Beecher of North Attleboro.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial also to be held privately at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Foxboro. Visiting hours have been omitted
