Sophia Zoulias, 89, of Manchester died peacefully in her sleep May 12, 2009 at Elliot Hospital.
Born in Manchester on December 3, 1919, she was the daughter of Charles Costa and Maria (Goutsas) Zoulias. She was a graduate of Central High School and was a lifelong resident of Manchester.
Miss Zoulias worked at International Shoe Company for over 40 years and retired as manager of accounts receivable. She later held a similar position with Silver Brothers in Manchester.
She was active for 65 years at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church including singing in the choir and serving as choir director. She was also president of the church’s Philoptochos Society and worked diligently for the bazaars, picnics and summer festivals. She was a member of the Daughters of Penelope, Ilios Chapter where she served as an advisor to the Maids of Athens for many years.
She was a member of the Noa Club, Theta Tau Sigma Society and the Daughters of Sparta Caberet Kerasvon Society. She also served on the board of directors at the Salvation Army.
Miss Zoulias received the Metropolis Clergy Laity Award for her many years of dedication to her church.
IN HER LIFE: The family includes nieces and nephews, Marea Lewis and Sturgis Lewis both of Newport, RI, John Youney of Skowhegan, ME, Samuel Youney of Santa Rosa, CA, Maria Czop of Kittery, ME, Andrew Zoulias of Frederick, MD, Nicholas Zoulias of Westminster, MD and Charles Zoulias of Manchester; and a sister in law, Irene (Churas) Zoulias of Holiday, FL; and many great and great great nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Olga Lewis and Christine Youney; a brother, George Zoulias, and a nephew, James Lewis.
Her family will remember her with love and affection as the hub of many Zoulias generations.
The funeral was held Monday, May 18, 2009 at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 111 Island Pond Rd., Manchester. Rev. Fr. Athanasios Nenes officiated. Committal prayers followed at Pine Grove Cemetery, Calef Rd., Manchester.
