Sarah Ruby Young, 88, of Tifton died Friday, May 8, 2009, at Southern Care Assisted Living. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Rev. Jimmy Voyles will officiate with burial to follow in Oakey Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 11, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Ms. Young was born on October 26, 1920 in Colquitt County and was the daughter of Thomas David Young and Mamie Robinson Young, both deceased. She was a retired school teacher, her teaching career covering 33 years, 31 of them at Omega. She was an All-American basketball player and, in the spring of 1956, took over as head baseball coach of the Omega High baseball team, the first woman, as far as we know, to coach a boys baseball team in the state of Georgia. At one time, she was coaching high school boys in basketball and baseball, high school girls in basketball, junior high boys in basketball and junior high girls in basketball. She was a member of Norman Park Baptist Church.
Ms. Young is survived by five nephews and two nieces.
