David M. Affonso, 60, of Swansea passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2009 after a long courageous battle with lung cancer. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Lima) Affonso. Born in Fall River, a son of the late Manuel & Mary (Mello) Affonso.
A plumber since 1970, David was a member of the Plumbers & Pipe-fitters Union Local 51 in Providence, RI. He worked for both Local 77 & Local 51, and was employed by Hart Engineering before retiring in June 2008. For many years he was involved in the SWS Hockey League; as both a coach and board member. David established the High School Development League, which assisted local high school athletes with ice time prior to the start of hockey season.
He enjoyed spending time with his wife & family. He enjoyed trips to Foxwoods; as well as Las Vegas & Walt Disney World. David also enjoyed golfing with family members on Sundays.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by 3 sons: David S. Affonso of Swansea, Steven Affonso of Somerset, & Richard Affonso of Fall River. Stepfather of Anthony E. Costa of Swansea. Grandfather of Carissa Affonso of Swansea & Kaylee Affonso of Fall River. Brother of Manuel Affonso Jr. of Fall River, Rosemary Macek & Jesse Affonso both of Somerset. Brother in law of Robert Lima of Somerset. Son in law of Edmund & Gilda Lima of Somerset. Several nieces & nephews.
His funeral will take place from the MANUEL ROGERS & SONS FUNERAL HOME 1521 N. Main St. FRIDAY at 7:45 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Louis de France Church, Swansea at 9:00 A.M. Interment in Nathan Slade Cemetery, Somerset. Calling hours THURSDAY 4-8 P.M.
