Obituary

Capt. Francis Edward "Eddie" Carter, 66, of New Bedford died Thursday July 3, 2003 at home after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was the husband of Sally Wedge-Carter.

Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Francis E. Carter and Hilda (Shannon) Tripp, he lived in Greater New Bedford for most of his life.

Capt. Carter was a commerical fishing captain and was the former owner of F/V Donna Lynn and F/V Kathy & Maureen. He later worked for the Bristol County Sheriff's Department until his retirement.

He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the Lakeville Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Retired Fishermen's Club, and the New Bedford Fishermen's Union.

Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, Edward S. Carter of Florida, Keith E. Carter and Donald Levesque, and his companion, Rita Esposito, all of Fairhaven; a daughter, Lynn Ruth Carter of Somerset; a stepson, Lance Wedge of New Bedford; 5 sisters, Sandra Carter of Phoenix, AZ, Elsie Testement and her husband Tom, and Ann Welch, all of Knoxville, TN, Marguerite "Reet" Campbell and her husband Hop of Pipe Creek, TX, and Linda Pearce and her husband Wayne of Westport; 2 brothers, Francis E. Carter III and his wife Penny of Knoxville, TN and Michael Tripp and his wife Barbara of Westport; 7 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Jon M. Carter.

His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday July 12, 2003 at 9:30 AM in the Seamen's Bethel, Johnnycake Hill, New Bedford. Visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Community Nurse & Hospice Care, P.O. Box 831, Fairhaven, MA 02719.
