Obituary

BEVERLY: Evelyn E. (Suggs) Ames, 87, died Thursday, April 16, 2009 in the Essex Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Beverly following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Donald H. Ames, who died in January of 1996.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee on September 18, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Marie (Bieber) Suggs. She had been a resident of Beverly since 1948.
Mrs. Ames had worked at the former Zayre’s Department Store in Beverly and then in domestic services at Danvers State Hospital until her retirement in 1988.
She was a member of the Beverly Senior Center and enjoyed taking trips to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. For many years, she and Don were avid square dancers. She also took pleasure in knitting, sewing, line-dancing and playing cards. Later in life, she devoted most of her time to her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald H., Jr. and Wendy (Farnkoff) Ames of Newburyport, three daughters and a son-in-law, Deborah M. Ames, Beverly and Stephen Christo all of Beverly, Karen E. Ames, and companion James Blake of Danvers, six grandchildren, Dawn Marie Budgell, John Ogiba, Donald H. “Bubba” Ames, III Michelle Kinney, Tyler Rubchinuk, James Christo, three great-grandchildren, Taylor and Jax Budgell and Justin Curtis, her sister, Peggy Collins of Memphis, TN, a sister-in-law, Mary June Wardell of Las Vegas, NV and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her brother, William Suggs.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday in the St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Cabot Street, Beverly at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly on Monday from 4 - 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Spectrum Adult Day Center, 600 Cummings Center, Beverly, MA 01915. Interment will be held in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beverly.
