Nawn, Hugh Jr. Of Marshfield, April 16, 2009, born December 9, 1927 in Boston and graduated Roxbury Latin School in 1947. Graduated from Harvard College in 1951. Graduated Harvard Business School in 1954, after which he joined his father at Hugh Nawn, Inc. a general contracting firm based in Dorchester, MA. He became President of the company in 1960. The company, originally founded in 1852 by Hugh’s great-grandfather Harry and his brothers Owen and Hugh, was instrumental in helping build much of Boston’s early subway system and underground public works infrastructure as well as many other major construction projects throughout the northeast. After the company closed in the late 1970s, he worked for a number of companies including Bristol Press in Connecticut, Island Creek Coal in Kentucky, and Wearguard in Norwell, MA. He retired in 1997. As a young man, he was a nationally competitive figure skater and active in the Boston Skating Club. In college he played on championship teams in tennis, golf and squash, often serving as captain. He held an individual national ranking in squash which he continued to play at a competitive level well into his later years. An avid skier and scratch golfer, he played and enjoyed sports throughout his life with his family and friends. He enjoyed following his children’s and grandchildrens’various sports activities. He was also a talented musician and singer, often spending his leisure time playing piano with various impromptu jazz groups, including jam sessions in his former home in Scituate, MA. He sang and competed with the Harbormen Barbershop Chorus of Scituate, MA and the Chessmen Quartet. He was a member of the Scituate Harbor Yacht Club, the Harvard Club, and served on the board of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. At St. Frances X. Cabrini Church in North Scituate, MA, he was a Eucharistic Minister and cantor. He was also active in Catholic outreach projects such as My Brother’s Keeper and Father Bill’s Place. He was active in the Parents’ Club at Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree, MA during his children’s time there from 1967-1982. In July, 1997 he married Patricia Deegan of Marshfield Hills, MA. They enjoyed bird watching and traveling; they visited Alaska, Ireland, and Colorado as well as many other locations.
He is survived by his wife of eleven years, Patricia Deegan Nawn, and six children from his first marriage, Karen Nawn-Fahey of Middlebury, VT, Lisa (Nawn) Dickinson of Billerica, MA, Kevin Nawn of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Heidi (Nawn) Branca of Hanson, MA, Wendy (Nawn) Grace of Scituate, MA and William Nawn of Bedford, NH. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren.
Funeral from the MacDonald Funeral Home 1755 Ocean, Rte 139 Marshfield Tuesday at 9 am followed by a Funeral mass in St. Christine’s Church 1295 Main St Marshfield at 10 am.
Visiting hours Monday from 4 to 8.
Internment will be in the Marshfield Hills Cemetery, Marshfield.
