Obituary

Lorande Woodruff M.D. - Urologist of North Hill, Needham, formerly of Wellesley and Belmont. April 9, 2009. Beloved husband of Olive P. “Kim” (Kimball) Woodruff.

Born in New Haven CT, he graduated from Yale in 1933 and from Yale Medical School in 1937. He interned at Mass. General Hospital, and then joined its Urological Service. After induction into the Navy in 1941, he worked with Harvard Medical School staff at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital for development of the use of human albumin for emergency blood transfusions. He then joined the Navy’s Medical Corps in the Pacific. At the War’s end he returned to the Urological Services at the Mass. General and Deaconess Hospitals where he remained in active practice for over fifty years. Dr. Woodruff instructed for the Harvard and Tufts Medical Schools, and was a member of the American Urological Association, the American College of Surgeons and the Boston Surgical Society. Despite the substantial changes in the organization of medical practice during his half-century of practice, he believed in maintaining close personal care of his patients, and continued to make home visits to patients, practicing independently of managed care organizations whenever possible.

Father of Fay Douglas Woodruff and her husband Robert Douglas of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA and their children Katie Douglas of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA and Ellen Douglas Kosson of Laguna Hills, CA. Father of Margaret “Margot” Gladstone Woodruff and her husband Dr. Robert J. Gladstone of Carlisle and their daughter Heather W. Gladstone of Carlisle. Stepfather of Deborah A. Bearse of Millis and her children Whitney Bryn Clayton of Roslindale and Leigh A. Clayton of Sands Point, NY. Brother of the late Margaret “Peg” Wilson.
