Obituary

Mrs. Lola (Lombus) Kirkiles, 81, died Wednesday evening, April 8, 2009 at Hospice By The Sea in Boca Raton, Florida surrounded by loved ones.



Lola was born on August 3, 1927 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Thomas and Helen (Laganas) Lombus. She was the wife of Charles J. Kirkiles.



Lola was a graduate of Lowell State Teacher’s College (UMass Lowell), class of 1948, graduating at the age of 20. She was an elementary school teacher at the Montrose School in Wakefield and at the Hellenic American School in Lowell and served as a substitute teacher in the Dracut school system.



Lola was a lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and Philoptochos Society in Lowell, and a member of the Daughters of Penelope having served as State District Secretary, Baystate District #8. She also served as the recording secretary of the charitable organization known as the Paint & Powder Club of Lowell.



In 1995 she and Charles relocated to Boca Raton, FL where she was an active member of St. Mark Greek Orthodox Church assisting each week with the mailing of the Church newsletter and the annual Greek festival. Over the years Lola was dedicated to serving her community in various ways, was active politically and most recently served as her condominium association president.



Lola was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Charles (Kirk) Kirkiles, her daughter, Haidee Marangos and her husband, Fr. Frank Marangos of New York City; her daughter, Elena Kirkiles of Norwell, Ma; her son, Toby Kirkiles of Florida and her beloved grandson, Greg Marangos.



Relatives and friends will be received at the M.R. LAURIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 295 Pawtucket St., Lowell on Monday April 13, from 5 to 8 pm. Her funeral will take place from the Funeral Home on Tuesday at 10:30 am with a funeral service to be held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in Westlawn Cemetery, Lowell. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Hellenic American Academy of Holy Trinity, c/o Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 62 Lewis St., Lowell, MA 01854.
