Michael A. Aquino, 88, of Auburn passed away Wednesday, April 1st 2009 at UMass Medical Center as a result of complications following back surgery.
Michael is survived by his stepdaughter, Maureen Stake of Auburn, son Thomas Aquino, a daughter Virginia Rundlett of Worcester, stepson Walter Sheehan of Oxford, son Mark Aquino of Jamaica Plain; thirteen grandchildren, Matthew, Joseph & Mark Aquino, Lauren (Aquino) Schluzas, Gregory, Geoffrey, and Sean Rundlett, Donald and David Sinnery, Donna (Sinnery) Kaliszewski, Suzanne, Dianne, and John Sheehan; ten great- grandchildren ; 2 daughters in law, Susan (Hamilton) Aquino of Jamaica Plain; and Patricia Sheehan of Oxford, a son in law, Ronald Stake of Auburn, and many nieces and nephews.
Mike’s wife of 37 years, Christine, passed away in 1999, and his four brothers, John, Philip, James and Samuel Aquino and three sisters, Josephine Wall, Connie Puretta and Ann Rosano all pre deceased him. Mike’s dear friend and companion of the past 7 years, Estelle Matthieu of Auburn, pre-deceased him by 3 days.
Michael was born August 3, 1920 in Worcester, the son of the late Anthony and Antoinette (Amatrudi) Aquino. He served honorably for four years as a mechanic in the Army Air Corps stationed in the Anglo Egyptian Sudan during World War II. Upon return from the war, Mike learned the electrician trade at Worcester Trade School and he spent the majority of his work life as a licensed construction journeyman electrician and shop steward with IBEW Local 103, before retiring in 1986.
Mike played piano and harmonica. He loved fishing, and he was an avid fan of the Red Sox and Patriots. All his life, Mike was an avid bowler. For the past several years before his back problems became severe, he was a devoted member of the Senior League at Auburn AMF Lanes.
A private funeral was held for Mr. Aquino from FAZIO FUNERAL HOME, 9 Branch Street, Worcester. Interment took place in St John’s Cemetery.
