Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Charlotte Hubbard Fries, formerly of Wilmington, Delaware died peacefully at home with her family, Sunday, March 29, 2009. She was the beloved wife of the late H. H. Hugo Fries, who predeceased her in 2005.
Charlotte was born on December 3, 1924 in Pelham Manor, New York and later moved to New York City and Colebrook, CT. She was the daughter of the late Harriett Richardson Hubbard and Allen Skinner Hubbard. Her father was a founding partner in the law firm Hughes, Hubbard and Reed in New York.
Charlotte attended Brearley School in New York, The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, CT and Vassar College in Poukeepsie, NY. In 1945, Charlotte married Herbert W. Warden, III and settled in Princeton, NJ, where they had four children. In 1960, Charlotte moved to Bermuda where she met and eventually married H.H. Hugo Fries, an executive with AIG. After eight glorious years in Bermuda, the company relocated them to Wilmington, Delaware where they resided for over 30 years.
Charlotte was a member of the Coral Beach Club in Bermuda, and the Greenville Country Club in Wilmington, DE. She was an accomplished athlete and was extremely active throughout her life. She coached women’s tennis at Wilmington Friends School and continued to play both tennis and paddle till just a few years ago. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, the English language, opera and painting. Her friends and family will miss her sweet, affectionate and loving nature as well as her elegance, grace and sense of humor.
She is survived by her children; Nancy A. Warden of Gloucester, Herbert W. Warden, IV of Bedford, Mary W. Taylor (husband, Herbert) of Pennington, NJ, and Anne W. Sinkinson (husband Mark) of Gloucester, sister Elizabeth “Betsy” Stott of Bloomfield, CT, and her five grandchildren, Heather B. Taylor, Elizabeth S. Sinkinson, M. Crawford Sinkinson, Jr., H. Hudson Taylor, Charlotte B. Taylor and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and brothers; Allen Skinner Hubbard, Jr., David Richardson Hubbard, and her twin brother, William Skinner Hubbard.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Annisquam Village Church, 820 Washington Street, Gloucester. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Charlotte’s memory be sent to the Brearly School, New York or a charity of one’s choice.
