Obituary

Richard A. ”Dick” Murphy, 77, of Abington, died Tuesday March 31st at his home surrounded by his loving family ,after he fought a long brave battle with cancer for many years. He was the cherished husband of 55 years to Nancy l. (Slayter) Murphy. Dick was born and brought up in Watertown; a graduate of Watertown High School, class of 1950 and he also earned a Bachelors Degree in Engineering at U. Mass Amherst in 1957. He was the son of the late James T. and Rachael M. (Hayward) Murphy. He worked as an electrical engineer in the aerospace industry for the Draper Labs in Cambridge, Northrop in Norwood, NASA in Cambridge and retired in 1991 from the Department of Transportation in Cambridge. Dick has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Abington, since 1954, where he taught Sunday school for 15 years. Dick was awarded Deacon Emeritus in January of 2009. Dick served his country in the United States Navy, during the Korean conflict from 1951-1953. He cherished being with his family. His family appreciated the Old Colony Hospice for all their loving care.

In addition to his cherished wife of 55 years, he was the cherished father of Bethellen Moynihan and her husband Christopher of Berlin, NH., Richard A. Murphy, Jr. and his wife Rebecca of Norton , Lisa Curtin and her husband John of Abington, Lauri Abrams and her husband David of Sarasota, Fl., and Melinda Towne of Abington ,his brother Gary Murphy of Watertown , his sisters Virginia Ross and Clara Richardson both of Marshfield , cherished grandfather of John Curtin, Nancy Galewski, Robert and Allen Murphy, Stephanie Souza, Maria and Leland Conti, Jr., Melody and Eric Towne and cherished great grandfather of Jeffrey Souza, Brialana Elliot and Olivia Mae and Stephen Galewski, Jr., many nieces and nephews.

His memorial service will be held on Saturday April 4th at 11:00AM in the First Baptist Church of Abington, 219 Adams St., Abington, MA. Visitation will be held, in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Friday April 3rd from 7:00-9:00PM.
