Obituary

Mrs. Amelia Guzek Wassell, of Blakely, died at St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home in Elmhurst on Saturday, March 28, 2009.

Mrs. Wassell was born on September 30, 1909, and observed her ninety-ninth birthday in September of 2008.

Born in Olyphant, daughter of the late Joseph and Marya Rymanska Guzek, Mrs. Wassell graduated from Olyphant High School and received a degree in dental hygiene from the University of Pennsylvania in 1928. She interned and later did PRO bono work at St. Joseph’s Children’s home in Scranton.

Mrs. Wassell studied voice at Marywood College (now Marywood University) and later at the Julliard School in New York City. For several years, she preformed on the Polish Serafins Radio Hour and at public events. She later served as general manager of the Empire Wholesale Company in Dickson City, a family-owned food product business, retiring in 1972.

Mrs. Wassell was a long time-member of the Pennsylvania Lawyers’ Auxiliary, and an active and long-standing member of the Lackawanna Lawyers’ Auxiliary and the Community Medical Center Auxiliary. She was an active, and the oldest living parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Olyphant, Pa of which her father was a founding member in 1909 – the year of her birth.

The Funeral will be Wednesday, April 1st, at 9:00a.m., from the Michael P. Glinsky Funeral Home, 129 Grant Street, Olyphant, with Mass at 9:30a.m. in St. Michael the Archangel Church, 132 Lincoln Street, Olyphant, celebrated by the Rev. Thomas M. Muldowney. Internment, parish cemetery, Blakely.

Friends may call Tuesday, March 31st, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, P.O.
