Obituary

Thomas Goodrich Craig, 73, an 18-year resident of York, Maine and former 27-year resident of Winchester, Massachusetts passed away Saturday March 14th, 2009 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1935, he moved with his parents, the late Henry S. Craig and Virginia (Goodrich) Craig to Duxbury, Massachusetts during the 1938 hurricane. He was a 1953 graduate of Governor Dummer Academy and continued his education at Amherst College, graduating in 1957. Following graduation he served four years in the United States Navy, stationed in Newport, Rhode Island with tours of duty in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean aboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts; DD-823 and the USS Warrington; DD-838. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1969 and held a number of rewarding jobs in New England with manufacturing companies including Gillette, Dewey & Almy, United States Shoe Machinery Corporation and North American Rockwell. He retired as president and general manager of Coatings Engineering Corporation of Sudbury.

An avid tennis player and sailor, he played for over twenty years at the Winchester Indoor Lawn Tennis Center and sailed with his family up and down the East Coast, Canadian Maritimes, Maine, and the Caribbean. His fondest adventure at sea came in 1979 when he served as navigator on a class winning campaign in the Marion to Bermuda Race aboard J.H. Westerbeke’s Tartan 37 “Isolde”.

On land Tom enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of the Seacoast Senior Men’s Bridge Club in York, Maine. As a young man he spent many summers camping, canoeing and hiking in Maine. He climbed the Knife Edge to the top of Mt. Katahdin, and paddled the length of the Allagash and St. Croix Rivers. He took great pride in seeing his grandsons follow in his footsteps and become fourth generation of his family to be campers at Flying Moose Lodge in East Orland, Maine. In Winchester, Mr. Craig was active in the Parish of the Epiphany, a member of the Monday Club, and coached youth soccer.

He was the beloved husband of Lilwen Ann (Hayward) Craig and the late Helen (Hertig) Craig. Mr. Craig was the loving father of David and his wife, Lisa (Thyson) and his daughter Lindy Craig, all of Winchester. He was predeceased by his daughter Amy Craig. He was the beloved stepfather of Lee (Hughes) Koonce and her husband Michael of Hingham, Jody (Hughes) LaMontagne and her husband Rick of Durham, NH, and Scott Hughes and his wife Heather (Roberge) of Dover, NH. He was the dear brother of Betsey Drollett and her husband David of Duxbury and the devoted grandfather of Timothy and Peter Craig of Winchester, and step-grandfather of Sam, Molly and Jack Koonce of Hingham, and Derek, Dustin, Adam and Luke LaMontagne of Durham, NH. He also leaves a niece, Stephanie (Drollett) Whelan and a nephew, Craig Drollett. Mr. Craig is further survived by 4 grand-nephews and 2 grand-nieces. A Memorial Service will be held at the Parish of the Epiphany, 70 Church St., Winchester on Thursday, March 19th at 2:00 PM. Friends and relatives are kindly invited. Interment is private.
