Joseph J. Zullo, 86, of E. Derry, NH died Saturday March 14, 2009 in the Pleasant Valley Nursing Center, Derry. Mr. Zullo was born in Chelsea, MA on February 9, 1923, son of the late Christy and Angelina (Riccio) Zullo. He had lived in Hollywood, FL and Brooksville, FL before moving to E. Derry one year ago. Mr. Zullo served with the US Navy aboard the USS Altair during WWII. In younger years, he fought in the Golden Gloves feather weight boxing division with his brothers at Madison Square Garden, NYC. He became very good friends with famed boxer Rocky Marciano of Brockton, MA. He held membership in the Moose Lodge in Hollywood, FL. Mr. Zullo had worked for Shamrock Cleaners in Derry many years ago. He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Phyllis (Judge) Zullo of E. Derry, two daughters, Patricia Hazard and her husband Robert of Worcester, MA, Bonnie Christophersen and her husband John of E. Derry, one son, Ronald Zullo and his wife Susan of Marston Mills, MA, three stepsons, Eric Worth of Atlanta, GA, Charles Worth of San Antonio, TX and Mark Worth of Berlin, Germany, 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three brothers, Felix Zullo and his wife Jean of Chelsea, Mario Zullo and his wife Eleanor of Chelsea, Jerry Zullo and his wife Loretta of Revere, MA, one sister, Barbara Libby of Chelsea, also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Joseph J. Zullo, Jr.
There are no calling hours. Following cremation, the family may hold private memorial services at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01710 (Earmark for lung cancer research). The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry is handling arrangements.
