Obituary

Stephen Arthur Tzianabos, MD, FACS, 73, of Manchester died March 12, 2009 at his residence after a period of declining health.
He was born in Manchester on January 14, 1936, the son of Arthur and Mary (Tsouhidou) Tzianabos. He was educated in the local school system and was a graduate of Manchester High School Central. He received a B.S. Degree in 1957 from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and a B.A. Degree in 1959 from St. Anselm College.
He received his medical training from Tufts University School of Medicine, graduating in June of 1963. He completed his internship at Maine Medical Center and his residency at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, MA.
In 1968, Dr. Tzianabos received a teaching appointment as a surgery instructor at Tufts.
Dr. Tzianabos served as Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs at the Elliot Hospital and Optima Health from 1995 until his retirement in 2004. He also served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of General Surgery for many years prior to retirement.
He was a member of the American Board of Surgery in 1969, Fellow, American College of Surgeons (FACS), 1970, Fellow, American College of Physician Executives, 1994, and a Joint Commission Physician Surveyor from 1995 until recently.
Dr. Tzianabos had been affiliated with many local hospitals dating back to 1968 including Sacred Heart Hospital, Notre Dame Hospital and the Catholic Medical Center.
He was predeceased by his wife Lorraine M. (Richer) Tzianabos in 2004.
Family members include two sons, Dr. Arthur O. Tzianabos and his wife Kirsten of Reading, MA, Christopher S. Tzianabos of Foxborough, MA; one daughter, Maria A. Tzianabos O’Neil and her husband Arthur of Portland, ME; seven grandchildren; one brother, Theodore ‘Ted’ Tzianabos of Doraville, GA; one nephew, Peter Tzianabos.
The funeral service was held on Monday, March 16, 2009 in St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 650 Hanover St, Manchester. Burial followed in Pine Grove Cemetery.
