Alexander J. Thompson, 82

Dateline: Norton, MA

Alexander J. Thompson, 82, of Norton formerly of Mission Hill passed away on Thursday March 12, 2009 at the Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood. He was the beloved husband of Janice R. (Stack) Thompson.
Born in Boston, MA on October 22, 1926 he was a son of the late Alexander and Mary (Cogans) Thompson.
Alex grew up and was educated in the Mission Hill section of Boston and was a graduate of Mission Hill High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country during WWII. He was honorably discharged from duty on September 5, 1946 with the rank of Private First Class. After being discharged from the U.S. Army he attended classes at M.I.T. and at the University of Massachusetts.
Mr. Thompson was a retired Health Inspector for the Town of Canton where he had been employed for 5 years, retiring in November of 2007. He was the former Health Agent for the Town of Norton for 10 years and a former Senior Inspector and Sanitarian for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts where he worked for 20 years.
A communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield he was also a member of the Lieutenant Harold A. Healy American Legion Post 222 in Norton and the American Legion Post 327 in Mission Hill. He had made his home in Norton for the past 38 years and was former longtime resident of Mission Hill.
Alex was proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed trips taken to Ireland, vacationing by way of cruises and listening to Irish music. He was an avid fisherman and a true New England sports enthusiast. His favorite times spent were those with his adoring family and grandchildren and the many summers spent at the family’s swimming pool and gardening. Mr. Thompson was also eagerly awaiting the birth of his fourth grandchild.
In addition to his beloved wife he is survived by his devoted children Alexander M. Thompson and his wife Georgina of Bridgewater, Michael J. Thompson and his wife Natalie of Attleboro and Kara A. Thompson of Milford. He was the brother of the late Robert Cogans, Paul Thompson, Louise Kelly and Helen Melia. Additional survivors include his cherished grandchildren Reid Thompson, Isla Thompson and Alexander Thompson, his dear mother in law Ann M. Stack of Auburndale and his sister in laws, brother in laws and nieces and nephews.
His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday March17th at 9:30 A.M. from the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield followed by a mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10:30 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church 330 Pratt St.(Route 106) Mansfield. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mansfield.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday March 16th from 4-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
