R. Jean Avery, 79
Beloved ‘Mum’ and ‘Grammy’
R. Jean Avery, 79, of Goffstown, N.H., died Monday, March 9, at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, N.H.
Mrs. Avery was born in Swampscott, Mass., on Aug. 31, 1929, daughter of the late Ida C. Jackson of Derry, N.H. She was a resident of Goffstown for the past three years, formerly living in Derry, N.H. for 32 years and Tewksbury, Mass. Mrs. Avery was a graduate of Stoneham High School in Stoneham, Mass., Class of 1947. She was a longtime employee of the Rockingham Race Track in Salem, N.H., where she worked as a clerk and sold lottery tickets and gifts. Mrs. Avery enjoyed crocheting, gardening, crossword puzzles and other crafts, as well as helping her daughter with her craft business. She was a longtime Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed time she spent with her family. She will be remembered as the warm, loving, generous, kind-hearted woman who greeted those who needed her with open arms. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert H. Avery, in 1981. She is survived by three daughters, Gale E. Avery of Goffstown, N.H., Jean L. Scanlon of Londonderry, N.H., and Dawn A. Brander of Chester, N.H.; three sons, Richard A. Avery of Indian Rock Beach, Fla., Ralph C. Avery of Bath, N.H., and Skip Avery of Keene, N.H.; 11 grandchildren, Samantha, Brittany, Ashlei, Dean, Ralph, Michelle, Rick, Sheila, Joe, Pat and KerryLynn; several great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the emergency personnel in Goffstown and the staff at Catholic Medical Center for their compassion, understanding and selflessness.
AVERY – Following cremation, calling hours were held on Friday, March 13, from 5-7 p.m. in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry, N.H. A funeral service followed at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. The burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in East Derry in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the The Salvation Army, attn: Capt. Stephen and Sally Warren, 18 Folsom Road, Derry, NH, 03038.
