Obituary

Joseph J. “Skeeter” Johnson Sr., 91, of Ledyard, passed away March 2nd at his home.

Mr. Johnson was born in W. New York, NJ on July 16, 1917 the son of John and Genevieve (Maxson) Johnson. After receiving his education, he served in the US Army during World War II where he was awarded the Good Conduct, Victory, and American Defense Service Medals as well as the Middle Eastern Theater Campaign and American Theater Campaign Ribbons. He was honorably discharged in December, 1945.

He was employed at Electric Boat in Groton, retiring from the Quality Assurance Dept. in 1982.
An avid bowler, boater, and golfer, he was also a member of the Groton Lodge of Elks.

He was married to Ruth Richardson Johnson in Richmond, RI on August 17, 1946. Mrs. Johnson died in 1993. “Skeeter” is survived by his children; John & wife Cindy of Westerly, Robert & wife Donna of Mystic, Joseph of Ledyard, and Sharon Olsen & husband Glenn of Savannah, GA. He was predeceased by his sister, Genevieve Glista.

His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 6pm-7:45pm, followed by a service at 8pm. Burial is private.

Inlieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice, 227 Dunham Street , Norwich, CT 06360.
