Obituary


PLYMOUTH — Melvin Earl Fryer, age 94 years, of Plymouth and formerly of New Bedford, died Friday, February 27, 2009, at Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Plymouth after a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Roebuck) Fryer.

Mel was born in Lowell, Ma., son of the late Sidney and Anna Holly (Fisher) Fryer and lived in Plymouth since 1964.

He was employed for many years by the New Bedford Gas and Edison Light Company as dealer-builder representative and supervisor of house heating. In 1963, he transferred to the Plymouth Division of the gas company where he was in charge of sales and in 1966 joined Meady Personnel Services in Boston and later associated with Warnsman and Ferioli Realtors in Plymouth.

Mel was active with the Exchange Club, N. B. Scallop Festival, Industrial Management Club, Brooks Lecture Club, Junior Achievement, Rotary Club and Eureka Masonic Lodge. He was a volunteer at Jordan Hospital. He was a former active member of Grace Episcopal Church in New Bedford and the Twenty-Thirty Club.

He is survived by his daughter, Ann Fryer Burke of Harrisburg, Pa., and Savannah, Ga.; grandchildren, Christopher R. Burke and his wife, Pamela of Croton-on-the-Hudson, N.Y., Peter Burke of Harrisburg, Pa., and Katharine B. Bradley and her husband, David of Silver Spring, Md.; and great-grandchildren, Teagan and Braden Burke, Sydney and Bentley Burke, and Griffin Bradley.

His private arrangements are with the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford with burial in Rural Cemetery.
