Kenneth C. Nielsen of Needham, a retired Firefighter for the City of Newton died on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at his home following a valiant battle with cancer. He was 61 years old. Born in Boston, Ken was a graduate of Newton Technical High School Class of 1964. A Sergeant in the US Army during the Vietnam War, Ken received 2 Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star for his brave actions during his tour of duty. In 1972, he joined the Newton Fire Department and was assigned to Station 7. A 32 years resident of Needham, he owned and operated KC Appliance for 15 years. In 1993, Ken retired from the Newton Fire Department after sustaining 3rd degree burns on his hands and face during a fire at the H.C. Starck Company in Newton. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion in Newton and the VFW in Needham. Ken would do anything to lend a helping hand, whether it be giving of his money or talents. This led him to volunteer in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts through Needham Cares. Ken was a very loyal friend to many. He was by far the life of the party with a smile to light up a room and a personality that was contagious, from his sarcastic sense of humor to warm affection, everyone he met wanted to be an instant friend. He always knew what he meant and meant what he said. A loving and devoted husband and father, Ken was known to always give his children what they wanted and more without any questions. Ken’s main goal in life was to live life to its fullest and to have fun, he taught everyone to a good time. All his family and friends, too many to name, will forever remember all the amazing fun and loving times spent with Ken.
The beloved husband for 38 years to Jane (McMullen), he was the loving father of Katie Kanozak and her husband Dave of Newton and the late Stacey L. Nielsen. Brother of Carl Nielsen of St. Petersburg, FL, and the late Philip Nielsen, Judith Caliri and Claire Devine, he was the brother in law of Marie T. Nielsen of Tilton, NH and John Devine of Woburn. Ken is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a celebration of Ken’s life from 1-4 on Sunday March 8th at the American Legion Nonantum Post #440, 295 California St. in Newton.
