Obituary

Augusta, GA – Mr. John M. Weigle entered into rest on Ash Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Brown officiating. A private burial service will follow at Westover Memorial Park.

Mr. Weigle was born in Augusta, Georgia on December 19, 1946, the third son of Mr. and Mrs. James Gardiner Weigle. He attended the Academy of Richmond County in the class of 1964. He then attended Auburn University on a Navy ROTC scholarship. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and served as Eminent Archon of the fraternity. At Auburn he met his bride, Miss Lucy Hargrove of Birmingham, Alabama, and the two were married shortly after graduation, on February 14, 1969.

Upon his graduation from Auburn, Mr. Weigle was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. He served on active duty from 1968 until 1975. His billets included USS Midway in the Pacific and USS Vreeland in the Mediterranean. While serving as a disbursing officer in Annapolis, Maryland, he earned a Master of Financial Management degree from George Washington University. He left active duty with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, but remained in the Reserves another 18 years, finally retiring in 1993 with the rank of Captain.

After leaving active duty, Mr. Weigle returned to Augusta. He worked for 23 years as a financial advisor for Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith, leaving in 1998 to become branch manager and senior vice-president for Interstate Johnson Lane, later to become Wachovia Securities. He was a member of the Exchange Club of Augusta and served as its President in 2006. He was a lifetime member of Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Hargrove Weigle; three sons, John M. Weigle, Jr., Charles H. Weigle, and Reed G. Weigle and his wife, Elizabeth Weigle; two grandchildren, Camilla and John; and two brothers, James G. Weigle, III and R. Daniel Weigle.

Active Pallbearers will be Dr. Richard Gayle, Dr. John P. Jopling, Mr. Benjamin McElreath, Mr. Charles Parker, Dr. Nicholas Powell, Mr. Allen Reed, Dr. Edouard Servy, and Dr. Marion Wier. Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the Augusta Exchange Club.

The family will receive friends at Platt’s Crawford Avenue on Friday, February 27, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
