SEARSMONT, MAINE: Robert J. “Bob” Young, age 74, of Searsmont, passed away February 17, 2009 in Bangor.
He was born in Everett, Massachusetts, April 10, 1934, the son of Thomas J. and Margaret (Bjurstrum) Young.
At the age of 11, he saved a boy, much older and bigger than himself, from drowning in the Shawsheen River at the peril of his own life. He went on to become the first Eagle Scout in the town of Tewksbury, Massachusetts. He started working at 11 years of age and was a hard worker his whole life working for 35 years as a pipe coverer.
During this time, he also saved his brother Ken from drowning.
He was a decorated Korean War Veteran of the United States Navy and was very patriotic. He also enjoyed bird watching, four-wheeling, and spending time with friends.
He was pre-deceased by his parents; his siblings, George Young, Marjorie Giles, Ann Nadolny, John Young and Joseph Young.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carole Young of Searsmont, ME; his children, Lynda Merrill and husband Les of Chelmsford, MA, Michael Young and wife Cheryl of Houston, TX, Lisa Collamore and husband Jeffrey of Hampden, ME and Debra Hunter of New Hampshire; his siblings, Thomas Young, Mildred Springford, Kenneth Young, James Arthur Young, Catherine Murphy; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his cats TJ and Penny.
Calling hours Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury, immediately followed by his Memorial Service to be held at the funeral home. Interment at Tewksbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Waldo County Home Health & Hospice, P.O.
