Paul J. O'Neil, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, died on Monday February 16, 2009 at Epoch Senior Health Care Center in Melrose following an extended illness. He was 82 years old.
Paul was born at his family home in Charlestown on March 3, 1926. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended Boston Public Schools. He enlisted into the United States Navy on March 17, 1943. He served his country during World War ll and was discharged on March 1, 1946 with the rank of Electrician's Mate Third Class. He began working at the Boston Naval Shipyard in Charlestown as an electrician and retired from there after 30 years of service. During the 1960's, Paul became involved in Charlestown hockey where he coached Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget levels.He was a member of Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus.
Paul is the beloved husband of the late Andrea R. "Audrey" (Ascolese) O'Neil. He is the devoted father of Paul J. "Ensign" O'Neil of Vinton, Virginia, Janet Gould and her husband Richard of Melrose and Joseph M. O'Neil and his wife Judi of Winchester. He is the loving "Pa" to Richard, Colin and Jarred Gould, Christina and Michaela O'Neil. He is the beloved brother of Rita Healy of Charlestown, Ruthann Humphrey of Charlestown, John Morrissey of Milton, the late Mary "Mae" Dobie, Doris Nigro, Thomas Morrissey, Thomas O'Neil, Joseph O'Neil, John O'Neil, Francis O'Neil and James O'Neil. He is the brother-in-law and best friend of Joseph A. Ascolese of Lexington. He is the dear friend of Beanzie and Marilyn Charbonnier of Charlestown.
Paul's Funeral will be held on Friday February 20, 2009 at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be on Thursday February 19, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery in Bourne on Friday February 20, 2009 at 1:15 p.m.
