Obituary

FARRIS, Paul Emile – Formerly of Wellesley, Feb. 14, 2009. Beloved husband of the late Dorislee (Hughes) Farris. Devoted father of Paul Farris Jr. and his wife Ruth of Groveland, Andrew Farris and his wife Greta of Providence , RI, and Jolie Farris and her husband Michael of Orlando, FL. Brother of Pauline Meehan of Danvers and the late George R. Farris. Grandfather of David and Lleah Farris of Groveland. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Born in Rumford, Maine in 1927, Paul Farris graduated in 1944 from the US Maritime Service Academy, where he became the youngest commissioned officer in the US Maritime Service at that time. During WWII, he served on several US flag vessels in the North and South Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Middle East war zones. After the war, he worked with the War Shipping Administration/United Fruit Company as a Chief Radio Officer. From 1948 to 1960, Mr. Farris worked for Tropical Radio Telegraph Company in Panama, managing international point-to-point communications stations. He left this role to serve as a lieutenant in the US Navy during the Korean conflict specializing in Communications and Intelligence Operations in the Pacific Far East. In 1962, Mr. Farris returned to the states to make his home in Wellesley, MA and earn a Bachelor of Science, and later a Masters degree, in Engineering from Northeastern University. While completing his degrees, he worked for Raytheon Corporation and ITT as a project manager developing shipboard search and tracking radars, missile systems and B-52 bombing-navigation systems. He retired in 1991 after a long and distinguished career in the technology industry. A long time member of Northeastern University’s President’s Club, Mr. Farris was active in many university organizations and was a past president of the Northeastern Alumni Association and the Sigma Epsilon Rho Honor Society. An avid ham-radio enthusiast, he was a member of the Society of Wireless Pioneers and the American Radio Relay League. He was a dedicated philanthropist, and gave generously of his time and resources to a great number of humanitarian interests and organizations including Big Brother of Boston and Catholic Charities. Mr. Farris loved the sea and could frequently be found enjoying the coast of Maine or spending time at his summer home on Lake Sebago, ME. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family. Funeral from the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., (Rt.16) WELLESLEY, Thursday at 8 AM. Funeral mass in St. Paul’s Church, Wellesley, at 9 AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 PM. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley.
