Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Elwood “Warren” Elwell, 85, of 31 Prospect Street died Thursday morning, February 12, 2009 following an extended illness. He was the beloved husband of Patricia J. (Sylvester) Elwell.
Born in Gloucester on November 23, 1923, he was the son of the late Norman E. and Dora M. (Arnold) Elwell. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and had attended Gloucester public schools.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the combat battalion of the 553rd Engineers Heavy Pontoon Bridge Company, as crew member building pontoon bridges in the European Theatre. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946.
Upon his return, he worked for three years for Cooney’s Sail Makers of Gloucester. Warren then began his lifelong employment with Brown’s Yacht Yard, where he stayed until his retirement at the age of 75.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he loved spending time with his great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. We love you Pops!
In addition to his wife of 34 years, he is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Margaret E. Young of Gloucester, Barbara J. and Michael Orlando of Galveston, TX, Patty A. and Carlton Macauley of Gloucester, six grandchildren, Tamara, wife of Jonathan Harmon, Ronda Peterson, and her companion, Angel Rivera, Bridgetta, wife of Rick Hernandez, Brittney Orlando, Michael Macauley and Jennifer, wife of James Courtemanche, eight great-grandchildren, Tayler, Joseph and Serena Lombardo, Autumn Harmon, Alyssa Peterson , Gabrielle Hernandez, Miley and Owen Courtemanche. He also leaves two sisters, Agnes Mahan and Grace Cote, two children from a previous marriage, Gail Romanuk and Sandra Mattson, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, E. Betty White, Dora M. Jensen, E. Faye MacFarland and his brother, Albert Elwell.
In keeping with his wishes, services will be held privately. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
