Obituary

Dorothy M. (Fell) Aiken, 86, of Mattapoisett died Saturday May 24, 2003 peacefully at the home of her daughter. She was the wife of the late Warren V. Aiken, and daughter of the late Charles and Helen (Herlihy) Fell.

Mrs. Aiken was born in New Bedford and had lived in Fairhaven for most of her life before moving to Mattapoisett Village in 1992.

She was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Mattapoisett.

Mrs. Aiken was formerly employed as a telephone operator with New England Telephone Company for 24 years until her retirement in 1979.She was a 1935 graduate of New Bedford High School where she was active in sports and cheerleading.

During World War II, Mrs. Aiken served in the Women's Army Corps and the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in Europe and Northern Africa. She was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service medal with one bronze service star, the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps Service ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. Mrs. Aiken was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Y.M.C.A., the Mattapoisett Women's Club and the Mattapoisett Senior Citizens. She was a charter member of the Women's Memorial Foundation in Washington, D.C. She was an avid swimmer and bridge player and enjoyed knitting. She was a loyal Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

Survivors include a daughter, Suellen Aiken of Mattapoisett; a son, Robert W. Aiken of Blackfoot, Idaho; a sister, Marjorie Kidd of Indianapolis, Ind.; 2 grandchildren, Shelley Parris and Rebecca Park; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.She was the sister of the late Charles Fell and Helen Dumas.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Route 6, Mattapoisett, Wednesday May 28, 2003 at 9 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Anthony's Church at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday May 27, 2003 from 2-6 PM. Burial with Military Honors will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Community Nurse & Hospice Care, P.O. Box 831, Fairhaven, MA 02719.
