Bernadette (Hurley) Fletcher, 91 years old, died January 27, 2009 surrounded by her family in Berkeley, CA after a short illness. She was the widow of the late Roy Fletcher who died in 1962.
Born in Lowell on April 26, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Kelly) Hurley. She attended St. Michael’s Elementary School and was a graduate of Lowell High School. Mrs. Fletcher raised her family in Wakefield, MA. and lived her final two years in Exeter, N.H. and in Berkeley, CA.
Bernadette was active in multiple Catholic organizations and spearheaded the effort to bring to New Hampshire The Odyssey House, a national organization serving a wide range of populations with substance abuse problems. Later in life she served as an administrative assistant and companion to the Catholic writer, Hannah Hurnard.
Bernadette led a life guided by her desire to help others with kindness and generosity which were unconditional to whoever was in need. She believed in the extraordinary power of living harmlessly and peacefully.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Fletcher) Desjardins of Exeter, N.H.; a son and daughter in law, William Fletcher and his wife Dilwara of Berkeley, CA.; ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews all of whom will miss her greatly.
Mrs. Fletcher was also the sister of the late Estelle and Grace Hurley, Margaret Favreau, Dolores Wholey, John Hurley and mother in law of the late Latifa Fletcher.
FLETCHER- Her Funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday, February 4th at 10 am at ST. MICHAEL’S CHURCH. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Tewksbury. Relatives and friends may call at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 NESMITH ST.(Rte. 38), from 8:30 until 9:30 am on Wednesday.
