Paul W. O’Neill, 86

Paul W. O’Neill, 86, of Mansfield formerly of Quincy and Milton died on Monday January 19, 2009 at the Cape Cod Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bourne. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret F. (Ferrigno) O’Neill. Mr. and Mrs. O’Neill were wed on November 9, 1946.
Born in Milton, MA on April 6, 1922 he was a son of the late James and Mary (Powers) O’Neill.
He grew up in Milton and was a 1939 graduate of Milton High School. He proudly served our country during WWII in the United States Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged on January 4, 1946 with the rank of Private.
Mr. O’Neill retired from AT&T and New England Telephone after 38 years of faithful service. A resident of Mansfield for the past 34 years he had formerly resided in Quincy and Milton.
Paul was a communicant and former usher at St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield and was a member and past Grand Knight of the George C. Shields Council 420, Knights of Columbus in Mansfield and was a Fourth Degree member of the Edward Douglass White Assembly K of C.
He was a member and past commander of the Cyril P. Morrisette American Legion Post 294 in Quincy and was a Norfolk County Commander of the American Legion and a member of the George F. Bryan VFW Post 613 and the Mansfield DAV Chapter 61.
Active in Mansfield town affairs Paul was a member of the Conservation Commission for 8 years and was a member of GATRA where he was very instrumental in helping to keep the Mansfield train station properly functioning.
Paul will be remembered most for his friendly nature, endless supply of jokes for every occasion, and his unique and colorful neckties. He enjoyed playing cribbage, socializing with friends and held a special place in his heart for animals, especially cats
He is survived by his devoted children Paula Jean O’Neill of Gray, Maine, Patricia A. O’Neill and her fiancé Candido Bretto of Lakeville, John J. O’Neill of Mansfield and Maureen T. O’Neill of Mansfield. He was the cherished grandfather of Forest O’Neill-Greenberg of Gray, Maine and was the brother of the late Lawrence O’Neill, James O’Neill and Vincent O’Neill, also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Monday January 26th at 9:30 A.M. from the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10:30 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church 330 Pratt St.(Route 106) Mansfield. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mansfield.
Visiting hours with veteran’s honors will be held on Sunday January 25th from 4-7 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Paul’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Mansfield Animal Shelter 175 Fruit St. Mansfield, MA 02048.
