Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Carlo J. "Charlie" Orlando, 93, of 88 Pleasant Street, died Saturday, January 17, 2009 at his home following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Grace T. (Loiacano) Orlando who died in August 2003.
Born in Gloucester on May 13, 1915, he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Rosario (Palazzola) Orlando. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester.
At the young age of fourteen, Carlo went to work as a commercial fisherman. He fished aboard many boats, including the “St. Joseph” and the “America”. He had also once co-owned and operated the “Jimmy & Joe”. Along with his brothers Jimmy and Tony, he opened a fish cutting business, “Orlando Bros.” They operated the business for over twenty years before retiring in 1977.
Carlo and his loving wife, Grace enjoyed wintering in Florida for twenty-seven years with their daughter and son-in-law.
He is survived by his daughter, Sarah and her husband, John Frontiero of Boynton Beach, Florida, two sons, Alerio “Leo” Orlando and John T. Orlando both of Gloucester, a daughter-in-law, Carol (Doyle) Orlando of Gloucester, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two brothers, Joseph Orlando of Gloucester and Tony and his wife, Josie Orlando of St. Petersburg, FL, two sisters, Nina and her husband, Michael Favazza and Nancy and her husband, Gordon Kinghorn all of Gloucester, six sisters-in-law, Antoinette Aiello, Angie Strescino, Nina Brancaleone, Mary Randazza and Marianne and her husband, Matty Tumbiolo all of Gloucester and Rosie Lochrico of Florida and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his son, Jimmy “Tank” Orlando, a daughter-in-law, Sandra J. (Aiello) Orlando, five sisters, Pat Tocco, Madeline Asaro, Antoinette Hawes, Florence McNair and Phyllis Interrante and two brothers, John and Jimmy Orlando.
His funeral services will be held on Thursday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9 – 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made his memory to the family, c/o Alerio Orlando, 27 Dodge St., Gloucester, MA 01930. Interment will be held in the Calvary Cemetery.
