Obituary

After a long illness, Mary V. Abood, 86, died peacefully on January 10, 2009 of congestive heart failure at her daughter, Sophie (Abood) Wright’s, home in Hooksett. Mary was born December 1, 1922, in Manchester, NH to Andrew and Ana Potoczney who immigrated to the United States from Warsaw, Poland in the early 1900s.

In1943 she met and married the love of her life and soul mate, Leo G. Abood. Together they had eight beautiful children and provided a loving home where family soon became the center of their world and all their affection. Mary was a fiercely loving wife and mother—dedicating her entire life to her husband and children. She was a life-long resident of Manchester, NH working in numerous locations among the Amoskeag Textile and Waumbec Mills. She left the workforce in the late 1960s due to some minor health concerns and to concentrate full-time on her family.

She and her husband endured the devastating loss of their 12-year-old son, John R. Abood, to a battle with leukemia in 1962 and the loss of a second son, Peter G. Abood, 29, to a tragic motorcycle accident in 1980. A devout Catholic, she was married for over 53 years before a rapid and short battle with cancer took her husband’s life in 1995. In 2007, Mary lost one of her daughters, Cindy A. (Abood) Blevins, after a long illness. Mary was a woman of great strength and vigor and continued to live life, love generously, and care deeply for all those around her even after these losses of her children and spouse.

Mary had a beloved family who will miss her presence dearly, but will feel her profoundly in their hearts. She leaves three remaining sons, two daughters and their spouses; Richard L. Abood and Cassandra Abood of Candia, NH; David J. Abood and Trudy Abood of Manchester, NH; Michael L. Abood and Penny Abood of Manchester, NH, Sophie M. (Abood) Wright and Laurence G. Wright of Hooksett, NH, and Theresa A. Abood of Manchester, NH. Additionally, she will be sadly missed by 16 grandchildren, over 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.

Mary was a wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and caretaker, but most importantly, she was an extraordinary example of love.

Memorial services for Mary Abood were private with a burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Bedford, NH.
