Obituary

Lloyd B. Miller, 82, of Dartmouth died May 16, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Louise M. (Boyles) Miller, and son of the late Bishop Allen C. and Rose (Coppin) Miller.

Mr. Miller was born in Cambridge and had lived in Dartmouth for most of his life. He was a graduate of Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, and Ohio School of Engineering, Drafting and Air Conditioning. He was a life member of the historic Bethel A.M.E. Church.

Mr. Miller was the former owner of Atlantic Soda Fountain Equipment and Atlantic Fire Extinguisher Companies. He also was a consultant to the Wamsutta Fire Extinguisher Company. During World War II, he was employed as a civilian with the U.S. Naval Ordinance Department.

In 1967, Mr. Miller was knighted in the Republic of Liberia in West Africa at the dedication of their newly constructed Masonic Temple. He presented a silver Paul Revere bowl to then-president Tolbert, which was a gift from Mayor Kevin White of Boston.

Mr. Miller was a Past Master of Union Lodge #4 F. & A.M. of New Bedford and Past Most Worshipful Grand Master of Prince Hall Grand Lodge Jurisdiction of Massachusetts; the St. Philip's Chapter #3 of the Royal Arch Masons; the Lewis Hayden Commandery #1 Knight Templars; the Syria Temple #31 Shriners; the Holy Sepulcher Consistory #17; the Supreme Council of the 33rd degree of the Northern Jurisdiction of the United States; past president of the Inter-Church Council; chairman of Melville Towers Services Corp.; past president of New Bedford Child & Family Services, past chairman and life member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army; past member of the Boys Club of New Bedford; former trustee of New Bedford Five Cents Savings Bank; member of the Kiwanis Club; the Wamsutta Club; NAACP; the Boy Scouts of America; the New Bedford Industrial Foundation; the New Bedford Port Society; and board member of Onboard.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Lloyd B. Miller, Jr., of San Antonio, Texas; 3 daughters, Andrea Medeiros of Dartmouth, Brenda Miller of Boston, and Gail Miller of Silver Spring, Maryland; 2 brothers, Allen Miller and Leonard Miller, both of Boston; a sister, Meta McQuaig of Cambridge; 2 grandchildren, André Medeiros of Dartmouth and Winston Miller of California; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was the brother of the late Frank Miller, Fitz Miller, James Miller, Cuthbert Miller, Melvin Miller, Ursula Archer, Eleanor Wilson and Doris Morgan.

His Homegoing Celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 21th at 11 AM in the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 532 County St, New Bedford.

Visiting hours will be held in the Bethel A.M.E. Church Tuesday May 20th from 5-7 PM followed by an Order of the Eastern Star Service at 7 PM and a Masonic Ritual at 8 PM.

Interment private.

In lieu of flowers, remembrance may be made to the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 532 County St, New Bedford.
